Most UK employees prefer to work remotely

Some remote workers do not want to see their managers, says a new study

Millions of British workers are not happy working in offices or workplaces! They prefer to work remotely, and 96% said that working from home full or part-time was one of the most positive aspects of their job.

These are the findings of a new national survey of employees conducted by the job site RemoteWorker.

When it comes to the ‘reasons’ they don’t want to go to the office, the wide-ranging survey found that 42% of employees have witnessed bullying in the workplace and 17% of all workers admit that the worst thing they do during the commute to the office is interact with co-workers.

Management is also an issue, with 23% admitting that they dislike being in the office mainly because they do not see their line manager.

Optimal organisation

In terms of logistics, the survey found that almost a fifth (19%) of respondents said they hated commuting to the office.

Almost four times as many employees admitted they thought face-to-face meetings were unnecessary and time-consuming compared to online meetings. Many employees revealed it can be very difficult to use asynchronous communication, especially if companies do not have the right tools.

Overall, the study highlights the disillusionment many employees have with office environments. Employers should take this into account and seriously consider offering more remote working opportunities where appropriate.

Businesses also need to consider how they implement remote working, including reducing micro-management, offering flexible locations, providing digital tools, etc.

Joe Boll, CEO of RemoteWorker, said: “We believe every employee should have the choice to work independently from an office or workplace if possible. This is why we use the most cutting-edge tech to make it easy for anyone to find a new remote working role.”
