Candidates from underrepresented communities have until 6th May to apply for the Raconteur ‘New Voices’ Business Journalism Course for unpublished writers.
The free 12-week programme for UK-based budding journalists over 18 and from diverse backgrounds was launched by B2B publisher, Raconteur. The programme is virtual, making it a more flexible option for candidates with existing commitments.
The programme aims to “find, train and nurture” the next generation of business journalists from communities underrepresented in media, particularly business journalism.
People of colour, those with disabilities and those who haven’t attended university or studied a journalism course and carers are encouraged to apply.
Candidate interviews will begin in May 2022, with a final five chosen for the programme. There, they will learn numerous journalism skills, including how to devise great article ideas, pitch, structure an article, and build up a network of interviewees.
The second part of the course will see the five candidates learn from mentors within Raconteur’s editorial team, who will help them craft an article on a business topic. The best articles will be published in one of Raconteur’s special reports, published in The Times and The Sunday Times, or online on Raconteur.net.
Candidates will be paid for their pieces, which can be used as part of their professional portfolio. They will also be added to Raconteur’s journalist database, where they will have the chance to pitch article ideas and receive commissions in the future.
The programme has received over 40 applications so far, so candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applicants should send 200-300 words about why they want to take part in this course, including why they are a good fit. Basic information is also required about current employment and availability.
Applications should be sent to: newvoices@raconteur.net. More information about the application process can be found here.
